Bring Retro Style Decoration To Your Room
If you were a flower child you may remember the favorite colors that all kitchens had; avocado kitchen appliances and orange carpets. If you weren’t a child of the seventies then you probably tuned into popular shows such as “The Brady Bunch” or even “The Partridge Family”. Looking back this was a fun time and stylish decade. If you are in the mood to create this look again you can create a 70′s style retro look.
Retro decorating isn’t confined to black lights, lava lamps, or mushroom covered wallpaper. Decorating in 70′s style is defined by the hippie mentality of freedom of expression. Give your room a retro feel by creating interesting combinations of textures and colors. Think outside the box! You don’t have to decorate with burnt orange or avocado green to create a retro style. Just add a few basic 70′s elements into your favorite colors schemes.
Furniture is the best place to start. You can find retro style furniture from the 70′s to add to your decor. Check out all the second hand shops or specialty stores for used furniture that you can redecorate and create a new look in your home. Look for Bean Bag Chairs or the egg chair that was suspended in the air. Make sure that the bean bag is sturdy and durable made from fabric.
Next, you will need to invest in a great retro area rug. The 70′s style was defined by shag carpet, but you don’t have to replace your existing flooring to get the same effect. Look for an area rug made in the retro shag style and choose a color that works with the rest of your room. Jewel tones are a popular color for shag rugs, but avoid these when you decorate in 70′s style. Instead, go for dark oranges, light browns, or even get a rug in the infamous avocado green.
Now that you have your furniture selected and the area rug you want to decorate your windows. The 70′s look consisted of beads so hang beads from a curtain rod and in doorways. If you need some privacy then you may want to consider blinds as an added feature in your window.
To finalize your new decor you want to add a few little accents to make this look more real. Try to find a lava lamp that best suits your color and design. Most lava lamps can be picked up at different places around. Take some 70′s colors like the orange, tan, avocado green, and lime and place them in a frame that can hung on the wall. This will give the look of the 70′s without costing you anything. Next you want to hang a disco ball from the ceiling. You can easily find a disco ball at a nearby shop or online. A black bulb can replace the regular bulbs in your room. The point is to be creative and enjoy being back in the 70′s.
