A Classic Television Show Lives On
Where does the sheriff not own a gun and his deputy have to keep his one bullet in his pocket? Of course, everyone knows it is only in the television town of Mayberry. Mayberry was never a real town, but Andy Griffith is a real person.
The Andy Griffith Show was a television series that began in’60 and continued for a total of eight seasons. Even now, forty years after the cameras stopped filming the television series, Andy, Aunt Bea, Deputy Fife and Opie continue to be shown in homes across America through the syndicated television show. In fact, the shows have been shown far more times in syndication than they ever were when the show was on prime time.
Andy Griffith played sheriff Andy Taylor. He was the reason the show grew in popularity. Andy was the wise and calm sheriff of Mayberry and Barney Fife was his high strung deputy.
Parts of the classic television show came from Andy’s real life. His hometown was Mount Airy, North Carolina. Mount Airy was home to the real Snappy Lunch dinner and the real Floyd’s barber shop. These two places and many of the story lines came to Mayberry from that little real town.
Mr. Griffith has studied music in college, but his specialty has always been in country humor. The first recording he made was a monologue titled “What is Was, Was Football.”
Griffith also acted on Broadway. His Broadway play, “No Time for Sargents” was filmed as a movie during the’50s.
When the Andy Griffith Show ended, Andy did not have much success for several years until he landed the lead roll as a country lawyer with a knack for solving crimes in the television series Matlock.
In 2006, Andy’s co-star from Mayberry, Don Knotts, who played Barney Fife died in Los Angeles losing a battle with cancer. Due to a deep friendship, Andy left his home in North Caroline to visit with his friend who was in the hospital before Fife died.
Andy Griffith has won several awards. The Broadway acting he did gave him two Tony nominations. For the television series, Matlock, he won the People’s Choice award in’87. He has also been awarded the Metal of Freedom award. Andy Griffith’s home state has dedicated a section of a state highway to him.
He has worked hard and been a success in many branches of the entertainment field, including music, stand up comedy, outdoor theater, Broadway and movies. However Andy Griffith’s biggest success was his role as Sheriff Andy Taylor on the television show Mayberry.
