Tips on Buying Your First 4X4

Who doesn’t like being able to cross rough terrain, patches of snow and ice, in a big vehicle? 4WD vehicles are part of our cultures today, but often the price undercuts your hopes of getting a 4WD capable vehicle on a budget. Maybe you just got hired… or just got out of college … or you want a new car for your new family which you can afford. But 4WD vehicles are too expensive, right? Here are a few reasons to consider 4WD vehicles.

1. Don’t let the prices scare you; many 4WD vehicles can be afforded on a budget

2. They are roomy for bigger families and long trips

3. 4WD trucks are almost always better in tough terrain like snow and ice. 4 wheel drive capable vehicles are heavier, have better traction, and are often designed to cut through dangerous snow and ice like a plow.

4. For families, they can be safer to drive when in an accident

5. More and more 4WD vehicles are green friendly and easier on the gas

So how do you choose a 4WD vehicle on a budget? Let’s go over prices, fuel economy, mileage, and intended use.

Price – Let’s say we’re talking an affordable vehicle no matter what, not the brand new 4WD vehicle which costs the price of a house or is built for the military. There are more and more 4X4s with affordable prices. Why? Many auto companies are selling more price friendly vehicles. Also, more and more 4WD vehicles are being sold used than ever before.

Easy on the Gas? – For your first 4WD truck, you might be surprised that some of the older vehicles available are better than newer cars. More and more auto companies are focusing on fuel economy to add value to their 4WD trucks, but some older vehicles were designed to be better on the gas too. Some older foreign cars like Toyota’s have superior gas mileage to other American cars from the same years. This occurs often because gas prices fluctuate in other countries too, sometimes much higher than US gas, making fuel economy a big issue.

Fuel Economy – Actually, for your first 4WD, you might be surprised that some of the older vehicles available are better than newer cars. How Will You Use It? – Lastly, you should consider how you will use this 4WD truck in the future. Will you be vacationing … going back and forth to work … or through tough winter terrain? If you’re going to be driving this 4WD vehicle a lot, you would want one good on fuel economy and with a trustworthy engine. You wouldn’t want to be stranded because the engine blew out.
